Available land (to purchase for building) is a problem in many of the villages. Hell, it's even a problem on the panhandle.

Besides, the bush villages aren't growing in population. Most of them are declining, if anything.

In our village, a lot of the people have sawmills and some sell lumber. Problem is that it takes time for the lumber to dry, sometimes it dries crooked. Generally a 2 man job and you have to know what you are doing to get the most out of a log. If you are a person that has a small budget, most of the time you are hauling logs is in the early spring- right now with a snow machine. Much easier and you have more time.

Traditional timber frame homes in the northeast were built with green timbers and often the sheathing put up green too. Not that drying isn't a nice idea. I've got a chainsaw mill I've used to put a dent in my lumber buying. The kerf is too much and the work too slow to saw many 1 inch boards but for 4x4's, 6x6's, etc., it sure saves some money. Without access to cheap materials though I would cut sheathing boards and whatever else I needed.
