Wife was telling me that a lot of the people in the villages coming in were using the cost to get them to Dillingham was a waste of tax payers money and they should be excused. The attorney was getting pissed that no one wanted to do their civic duty.

Budget crunch. Why not use the tele conference or something a little more cost effective?

About half of the village is summoned for a year term. I don't know if we go to Aniak now or not. Could be Bethel. People that need to be put in jail for more than 3 days here go to either Bethel or Anch. Jail guards here after hours are just local citizens that get paid about $17 an hour. We have 1 jail cell, so sometimes there are 2. Sometimes the persons, arrest is handled over the phone. They pay a fine, and get let loose. We have no Village Public Safety Officer right now, but do have a Trooper/Brownshirt. Locals usually that are arrested are for drunk and disorderly.

My son was summoned while he was attending college in Honolulu. They didn't offer to fly him back and forth though.

Aren't people excused from jury duty if they're attending university away from their legal domicile? Or does Alaska law require people to do it even if they are living in another state for university?

As a Texan I never had to do any jury duty while I was attending college in other towns.

In most places jury selection comes from voter registration lists.
If you are on the voter registration list in your home town and got called, attending college some where else usually got you excused.

Some ignorant college students registered to vote in their college town, then tried to deny they were residents when jury notices came.

Some college students aren't too bright !

Jury duty selection here comes from the pfd registration. My husband got called for jury duty in Wasilla just after we moved to McGrath. They excused him.
