Yep- just read it in the online Anchorage Daily News adn.com | Alaska News, Jobs, Cars, Homes, Rentals, Classifieds and more. A snowgoer ran over a dog in Jennifer Freking's team. She and her husband are both running teams of pure Siberians. They are from Minnesota. How sad! I agree with Dusty- that idiot needs to be strung up! Grrrr.....

Oh, there is absolutely no excuse for that kind of behavior. I hope the stupid drunk who did that pays.

Reckless...
Yeah, that's really so sad. Apparently another of their dogs was badly injured, as well. Nothing like a drunk with a motor vehicle...and Xa'at, you're probably correct - the driver was drunk. No sympathy here for anyone who drives recklessly, for any reason.

I have yet to see or hear of the snowmachiner being drunk. In my area us "snowmachiners" share the trails with dog teams and mushers. Many areas are tight trails in thick woods. Hard to see around corners. Also when both are traveling at night a snowmachiner will have a hard time seeing a dog team that might be coming around a corner until it's to late. The only light source is on the mushers head and they can still be back around the corner.
I'm not taking sides. You'd think the trail would be closed to snowmachines until the race is over.

Might be a good invention idea. Build a light source to attach to the lead dog!

Jeff King has LED lights on each of his dogs when he ran the Kusko this year. A few others had the small lights, too.

Now if it were a requirment for all teams to have running lights on the dogs...it might make them more noticable. And if they use red and green for port and starboard...others can determine which direction the team is traveling. Like an airplane or a vessel at sea!

All the harnesses also have reflective tape and some even have reflective ganglines.
Probably doesn't help going at them head-on though.

Maybe the dogs themselves could glow...
