Slim always means business.....

Every place has its own plusses and minuses, Alaska is no exception. If you live in Southeastern AK, you escape the harsh harsh winter cold, but get waterlogged from the rain. If you live in the Interior, you get the full summer / winter seasons, and if you live on any island or inaccessible area, you pay much more for consumer goods.

If I decided to move to AK, I would have a hard time figuring out where I would like to go. However having 7 Huskies, its harder finding some place to rent that allows pets of that nature, and I am not sure I would want to buy some where until I really knew if I wanted to reside in AK for a length of time.

And transporting 7 Huskies up to AK would be lots of fun.....

And yes, AK is expensive, no doubt, I have been spoiled to the lower cost of living here in the area of Virginia I live, its 25% lower than the national average.

One job I would love to do is work as a dog handler for a kennel in AK, but I would be back again to the issue of what to do with MY huskies...

Martin Buser is a funny guy. He took his gps tracker and gave it to a pilot. The pilot went flying around the race course and people couldn't figure out why he was mushing at 130mph. Ionearth wasn't very happy about this. That was a good laugh.

I was 'almost' offered a four-month job at a resort, but they wouldn't allow my dog to come with me...something about there being too many eagles around. Not my dog, thank you!

Can't imagine how you'd find a place to rent with 7 huskies!

I'm looking elsewhere to buy something, am pretty limited location-wise because of my budget. Someone posted on here about renting a trailer that had a beautiful view, in the country, I think, but I don't see how you'd find anything like that from out-of-state.

If you do look to go up to AK, best of luck to you. I wouldn't move without my dog, either. Sounds like the interior is where I'd like to visit, weather and scenery wise. No rain is good rain to me!

Congratulations to MACKEY, KING and all the mushers!!!

Just read that thread about Martin Buser! Hilarious...people were 'confused' when he showed to be traveling 130mph? Must be a pretty funny guy!

Sunset_VA: Loved your dog pic! Huskies rule!!! Wanted to tell you I met Gary Paulsen last year when he came to our village during the Iditarod. He wasn't running that year, but came to visit the school. He signed my copy of Winterdance, which is my favorite book. He was such a laid-back guy, and so friendly. His sense of humor is just like the book too! I was almost speechless meeting him- I have idolized him for so long- but he puts you at ease immediately. Great guy.

Warptman: ROTFLMAO!!!!! That Buser is such a nut!!! LOL!!!!!

SeeBee: Hope you can make it up to AK- keep looking! Once you get there, you won't want to leave!

When was Gary Paulsen's book published, and do you know the publisher's name? I've found 118 novels in our library system written by Gary Paulsen, some about surviving in the wilderness, but nothing titled 'Winterdance'. Still checking but thought either snowpuppy or Sunset_va might know... Thanks, snowpuppy, I look forward to visiting AK sometime!

The book I have was published in 1994 by A Harvest Book Harcourt Brace & Co. The ISBN # is 0-15-600145-4. I picked mine up in a Barnes and Noble years ago- this book is great reading and will have you rolling with laughter! I've also got Woodsong and Puppies, Dogs, & Blue Northers. More good reads by Gary!
