Hope you find Winterdance, the part where Gary Paulsen tells about him being picked up by a bush pilot and the episode with transporting his dogs in that flight is frightening.....The dogs almost caused the plane to crash. Snowpuppy, you lucky husky, getting to meet Gary! Congratulations Lance and all his huskies! I called Lance last fall and talked about huskies, Alaska, loving the outdoors, and beating Cancer! I had the very same form of cancer he did, and pretty much went through the same treatments, I don't know how he does what he does! We both agreed, it makes you view life much differently! Real Nice guy and very gracious man. GOOD FOR YOU LANCE! YAYYY Just remember the race still isnt over yet! On huskies....straight ahead! |

Theres a story on the early years of bush flying that a teacher was going to a village and her cat got loose in the plane. The cat went crazy and it ran up to the pilot and started attacking him. The lady couldn't control the cat so the pilot opened the door in flight and there went the cat. The pilot told the mad teacher, "don't worry, cats always land on their feet."

Chances are it landed on soft tundra or soft snow. It's probably still out there cross bred with a lynx.

Yeah, good one. And the pilot returned as??? Some people are able to rise above the tough things they're dealt, and you and Lance are those kinds of people! Still watching & checking the race...

I am still following it also, don't you know it has to be mind boggling for the mushers not finished yet, to keep on knowing the race has been won?
Most cancer survivors have issues with fatigue, due to the treatments depleting healthy cells, I know I do have more fatigue at times than I did before I was treated, thats why I admire Lance so much, I know he has got to be hurting lots to keep going. Another thing I have noticed is that cancer survivors don't seem to get as cold as they did prior to going through chemo or radiation...Just my findings, I know the cold does not bother me as much, but of course here in Virginia cannot be compared to -30's of Alaska. They really love the sledding ! Isn't the All Alaska Sweepstakes coming up soon? I have fostered about 20 some huskies for the Siberian Husky rescue I belong to since 2005........some of them that went to the rescue, would have been top notch team dogs, I kept 3 of those that turned out to be chowhounds...haha...the others I have love to run! Now I see why the kennels have 20-40-70 huskies, out of all the ones they have , about 40% will want to run sometimes and not give it their all, 30% want to run their best, 10% will always want to run, and the last 20% will never want to run! Hike Huskies....on ahead....................... |

Well, both of the Frekings are in White Mountain, it looks as if both will finish the race, good on them! I say! The loss of one dog and injuring of another would have to be demoralizing, the temptation to think "this is madness!" (although in a sense is probably correct) and just quit, cutting losses and running had to have crossed their minds. Perhaps because they ran the race together, two teams of dogs, two sleds, staying together, they had each other and the dogs for emotional support. In any event, I'm glad they stuck it out. Also,....Rachel Scdoris is out of Koyuk and moving, looks as if she will finish this race again. I can't imagine the courage it would take to challenge almost 1200 miles of Alaska, in winter, blind, I believe this to be her third race, You Go Girl!!!!!
