Yep. That's it. The US border in Alaska only needed my DL but told me to have a passport next time i travel abroad.

Nonetheless, they can and have turned people away at the border for not having a passport. You don't really need one to go into Canada; you supposedly are required to have one to pass the U.S. border. I'd say you got lucky at the Alaska border. I would never advise anyone to try it.

Agreed on the passport. They state it is required for entry back into the USA and I would not roll the dice on that one. They've been requiring passports for a while now.

Yep. You have to prove to border patrol your identity and that you are a US citizen. The approved method of doing so is showing a US passport. If you lose your passport or something, you can jump through some alternative hoops, but personally I wouldn't deliberately gamble on getting a nice and efficient agent who'd promptly do so without causing me problems, let alone on various agencies communicating effectively to verify my identity in a timely manner. Much easier to just do it the right way and swipe the passport if you have the option.

Plus, might as well have a valid passport in case stuff doesn't get sorted promptly with this Real ID mess.

We went ahead and got passports for all of us, so there will be no issue there! I found a job and I start August 9th! We begin our journey to Alaska in just a little over a week. We are excited! Thank you EVERYONE for your input and opinions! They were a huge factor in our decision and it would have been a lot harder without y'all!
