I recently bought plane tickets to visit Alaska (landing in Anchorage) on April 17th to the 21st. I've been intrigued by the state of alaska for a while now and before getting it my head that i want to move there, i'd like to visit it first. This obviously doesn't give me too much time to travel the state and see everything, but if anyone has any suggestions for me that don't include blowing a massive budget that would be very helpful. I'm 24 yrs. old from Pennsylvania, active, and am not well traveled so i have the feeling that i'm going to be easily entertained even from just driving around.

I will arrive on a thursday (i'm going alone). and was thinking maybe fri & sat could be devoted to renting a car and driving to Fairbanks and back (staying overnight in fairbanks). Does this sounds like a good idea or are there any other suggestions as to a small road trip i can do, with seeing some cool scenic stuff? Also i realize i'm coming at a time when winter ends and spring begins, which also raises concerns as to what i'm capable of really doing at this time.

any comments greatly appreciated, thanks

You might want to make the loop, drive to Fairbanks on the Parks highway and then come back on the Richardson and the Glenn. That will show you a lot of country. Stop often and take photos. Hopefully you have good weather.

This will be break up so you won't have much green to look at, but if the weather is nice it will still be beautiful.

On your way back you could make a side trip to Valdez and then after you get back to Anchorage you could make a trip to Homer or Seward. Lots of driving, but you want to see it all when you are young.

Maybe you can rent a small RV in Anchorage? Fuel is expensive these days, but you can stop along the way, and even sleep in it if you want.

i think doing the loop is a pretty good idea, instead of backtracking right back to anchorage. I'll probably end up going to Fairbanks friday, Valdez saturday, then back to Anchorage Sunday. This gives me about 6 to 7 hours a day of driving, and i can stay at hotels along the way. I'll be sure to post some photos after the 21st of april. I feel like I'm doing this trip a little blind, not really sure what i'm going to run into, but part of me wants to keep the trip this way. thanks

Hopefully you'll get some good views of Denali. But it'll be a great road trip.
