I just drove the highway for the umpteenth time. There was no snow or ice on any part of the highway, contrary to what was indicated on yukon511.com. The road was in pretty decent shape, except for the known trouble spots between Destruction Bay and the border and between Tok and the Richardson Highway.

Canadian Customs was much more inquisitive this time around. We were asked the usual questions, but in addition, we were asked things like our occupations. When we responded with retired, the agent wanted to know what we did before we retired. I was also asked what the license plate number on my truck was. I'm sure a lot of people don't know their license plate number, but mine was easy as it's a personalized one with my name. I know agents profile, but we were two retired people in a late model pickup truck. If someone sticks out in the slightest, expect a pretty intensive grilling. And this was on the busiest day I've ever had at the Sweetgrass, MT crossing. Normally there might be a car or two ahead of us, but this time it took over 45 minutes to get up to the booth.

Also, for the first time ever, and I've been doing this for over 45 years, we encountered an RCMP DUI checkpoint between Ft St John and Fort Nelson, around 7 or 8 pm. One officer asked for my driver's license and proof of insurance while the other sniffed around my vehicle.

For those waiting for good driving conditions, now is the time to go. Very few vehicles on the road. Some southbound traffic, but nothing like I experienced in 1986! That was an exodus!

I might be flying down with the brother in law to bring back a truck and trailer in June. Thanks for the update.

I just drove the Alcan for the 21st time a couple weeks ago. I flew to Chicago and drove some fronds van up to ANC for them. Had a blast! I drove over to Washington state to meet up with him in Merritt BC. Due to the fires that started before crossing into Canada that day we didn't meet up. We lost contact with each other due to my gci phone not working in Canada.

He wound up in Alaska a day before I did but the drive was worth it.
