Will be moving to Sitka soon and trying to figure out best way to move household goods to there. We have a moving allowance of 10k but not sure how far that will go.

I was thinking the best way was to uhaul are stuff to Seattle or thereabouts and put our stuff in a shipping container to go up.

Having trouble figuring out the barge companies and how they calculate size and weight.

I think we need to downsize a bit more as with the 2 of us we have enough things to fill a 3bd home.

Any help would be appreciated.

Uhaul to Seattle. Load into a container. Drive to Bellingham and take the ferry to Sitka. Call the barge lines and ask about rates.

Do a "craigslist curb alert" to offload some of your bulky junk, especially the cheaper furniture, but preferably all the furniture. I wouldn't bother trying to sell any of it, as that just wastes time. Very few people are willing to pay anything for used furniture: the going rate hovers somewhere around free.

Weights and dims are calculated in cubic feet or cubic meters and pounds or kgs. You generally take your measurements in inches (or cm) and give your results in feet (or m).

length x width x height x quantity = volume

Samson barge: 907-331-3522. Alaska Marine Lines: 907-747-6625. Those are the barge companies that come in here and are reliable. Taking the ferry up also a good option, takes 4 days to get here. Also Allied van lines has a affiliate here, AAA moving 907-747-7281 Richard is the guy to talk to, he is a good guy and has a great crew here. If you barge stuff out of Seattle, he is a good guy to have move your stuff into your place here. Have done the barge thing with a vehicle and did the ferry thing too. Good luck!

Samson is 800 number, not 907, oops, sorry! Was going to add that getting rid of stuff you really don't need is a good idea, there are always people moving outta here. You can get whatever you need here. Bring rain gear!

Being the weekend I haven't had a chance to talk to the barge companies, if you drive up with a uhaul and movers can you load at their facility?

Yes. Talk to them about logistics. I can buy tires out of Seattle and the tire store arranges to get them barged up. Same goes with vehicles and such. You lined with a place to live I would hope.
