Best come in summer so you can decide if you really want to live in constant 60 degree drizzle.
What's the easiest way to actually get around & visit certain places in Alaska? Do you have to do the ferry, say from Juneau to Anchorage, or do you fly? I'd definitely come to Juneau first, but if I had money or extra time, I wouldn't mind taking in Anchorage or maybe one of the smaller places like Palmer, or Ketchikan.

That really depends on where you are going. To see the cities you mentioned, I'd recommend taking the ferry out of Bellingham to Juneau. Along the way you could spend some time in the ports- Ketchikan, Wrangell, and Petersburg. Then, you can be in Juneau for a while. After that, catch a plane to Anchorage and explore that area.
You can also get BACK on the ferry in Juneau and head up through Sitka and Skagway then drive to Anchorage.

I need to get my butt on the ferry one of these days and see some of the SE towns I haven't been to yet. I haven't been to Haines and Gustavus since I was a wee little one, never been to Yakutat, Hoonah, Angoon, Tenakee, or Met... I really need to see POW too.

Unfortunately, you'd have to take the Le Conte to make some of those stops. I hate the Le Conte. To me, it seemed claustrophobic and over-crowded the two times I was on it. There won't be a third. My father-in-law came down from Haines on it and felt the same.

Yeh, I've never heard anything good said about the LeConte, but it's not like it's a horribly long trip.
You know AMHS's motto: Public Transit Quality for Private Transit Price!

It's the Alaskan experience...

I suppose it would really depend on which channel you like watching.
