Just google the particular state in question. I've known about WA for decades. We have a winter homer in AZ, so I know about that one and ID is where Dave Smith Motors is. There is a form on the ID gov web site you fill out and give to the dealer in ID. I'm sure there are other states with similar exemptions.

Thanks. I'll check it out. GA has some funky law now that makes buying a used car from an individual a pain. Used to be able to do it without paying taxes, now they get you.

We use the sales tax exemption every time we go to WA. You just have to ask for it and show your Alaska DL/ID. That's how it works with purchases in a store....not sure if a vehicle purchase would be any different.

Alaska used to have a DMV office in Seattle, and many AKUSA branches all over WA and OR. Plenty of people buy cars in the lesser and drive them back up, my dad's 1979 Chevy pickup among them. So if you do have an account at AKUSA you can buy from a dealer or an individual cash or even finance, you can think of the Pac northwet as an extension of the AK market with a bonus extended test drive.

In today's connected world physical location of a financial institution is immaterial. The finance guy can deal with any financial institution in the country. I can't even remember the last time I went to my credit union. I use ATMs for withdrawals and remote deposit for any checks I receive in the mail.
