Bethel Alaska Photo Gallery - 2005 Spring Breakup (Thanks Jo Jo!)

2005.

I didn't take any last year, the ice went out when I was at work and it just flushed out. No flood at all.

Bugs have been getting worse & worse down here every summer. We don't have winters to kill off the larvae. Why are they so big & plentiful up there?

The largest Alaskan mosquito is the Snow Mosquito (Culiseta Alaskaensis), which overwinters as an adult under the snow, usually in leaf litter, beneath loose tree bark, or in dead tree stumps. This is the first species to emerge each spring, usually from mid- to late April.

They can get quite large. When you see the following road sign, you know you are in the area where the largest mosquitos roam:

In such areas it is advisable that you carefully watch your children.

I just heard on the radio it will be another week of unseasonably cold weather here on the slope. That sucks. It's 35 to 40 below again today. It's really getting old.

Are mosquitos a problem in every part of the state? Or just a few areas?
