Default Not much here about Nome???

As many posters on here I have hopes of moving to Alaska.Nome really jumps out at me as THE spot.I did a search on here and not a whole lot came up for it.I have a girl friend and two kids along with myself that would be moving there if the decision is finalized.Of the threads that did come up the problem of housing and the problem of substance abuse was mentioned however it was also mentioned that there usually was some kind of employment.I am not real good at typing so to make this short for now, is there anyone out there that can give me some insite to daily life around nome.Things like Is it a close knit community, friendly, ect. One other question is how many trees or forest are nearby. That might seem like a silly question but everything I have seen about Nome is tundra and more tundra.

I have more but will leave it at that for now and see where it leads

"There's no place like Nome." I saw that on a job ad once in a trade publication.

It gets cold there, too. Still around 10 t0 20 below Tundra at one side, and salt water at the other side, and then during the winter: snow and ice at one side, and ice at the other. The Iditarod just ended in Nome recently.

Trapper, try doing a Internet search, also, lots and lots of information about Nome online.

But, do try keeping a open mind on what you read, and by all means do carefully weigh your decision and choice wanting to move there. Look up the radio station in Nome KNOM, and their website has tons of photos and information. KNOM - The Alaska Radio Mission

And city of Nomes website. Nome Convention and Visitors Bureau, Nome, Alaska

As Ray said, the Iditarod just ended there, its the highlight of the cities year! Gee for that matter its highlight of my year too.......:-)

Thanks for the replies.I have read a lot on the internet and of corse I like to watch the prospecting shows that have to do with nome. It is hard to put into words just what to ask.I live in northern michigan now and it is a great place to live how ever things are slowly closing in around here.We live a simple life and that is getting harder to do around here.It appears that the people in nome are still able to do that.I definatly have a live and let live mentality but sadly fewer and fewer have that around here any more.
BTW the weather is one of the positive things things nome has going for it.

I've spent 4 summers and one winter in Nome. Housing is tight and expensive. Especially if you are thinking of moving up in the summer. If your are a teacher or a nurse you might have a little more luck with the housing part. They have been known to provide some housing both permanent and temporary.

I sure wouldn't take my wife and kids until I was certain I had a job and housing lined up in advance. What trees??? The driftwood on the beach? Or you can drive out the way out the road to Council. They still have a few trees that reminded me of fence posts with branches. In Nome proper and the immediate surronding area the only trees are the ones that get shipped in at Christmas.....

Hey trapper1, where in northern Michigan you at? We're near Harbor Springs and planning our move July, was June, but something came up.

I agree though, around here a lot has changed and is getting quite closed in.

Well nephler have you heard about a little town named pellston How long have you lived in Harbor springs and when you say you are moving is that to Nome or somewhere else in Alaska?
Stiffnecked Thanks for the reply. The question about the trees came from talking to someone else about the area and I do plan on having things lined up if we make the decision to relocate to Nome or somewhere else.

Your welcome. Nome is an interesting place. But it's not like Anchorage or Fairbanks where you can just up and move to. When we first moved to Anchorage that's what we did. Wife, three kids and myself. Moved in the summer, camped in one of the campgrounds, and by day #5 had an apartment and a job. Nome and the smaller communities aren't that forgiving.

Pellston eh Chris, just around the corner...the ice box of the midwest. Well, used to be anyway. I've been in this area most my life. No, not moving to Nome. It looks like we'll be in the Anchorage area due to work, but we'll see where things take us.
