The west coast of Mexico is a lot of fun. I liked Mazatlan the best. THe Caribbean can be fun too if you're cruising with friends.

Mazatlan is cool b/c it hasn't yet sold out to tourism. It's a working and functional city and not some destination that was fabricated because of tourism.

I've always been partial to Veracruz, yeah, I know, it's on the Gulf side but, it has perhaps the only Universally recognized University in Mexico, it is also the place wherein you would be least likely to run across another "Gringo" (actually, the word means "foreigner" and is not derogatory) When Cortez first dropped anchor and began his conquest of the new world, he landed in the town he named "Veracruz", " True Cross" in Spanish, it has the oldest pre-lenten festival in the new world, yeah, I know, Rio is better known as is New Orleans. In Veracruz, the majority of tourists are Mexicans and a lot of the others come from various other Central and South American countries. The people are friendly and all the big hotels have someone who speaks English, as do the major Banks and College Students are more than happy to try out their budding English skills. Also, the food in Veracruz is as different from the food in the rest of Mexico as the food in New Orleans is different from the food in the rest of the 49 other states. The police are relaxed, as long as you are not harming another person, or stealing from, or conning someone else, they will figure you are a rational adult and leave you alone. The Huachinango Veracruzano, (Red Snapper Veracruz) is famous thoughout the Hispanic world, and the things they do with Shrimp and Crawfish, as well as the lobster are amazingly good! But, then again, I speak the language and enjoy the culture. By in large, when I go down to Mexico, I don't go there to surround myself with other Gringos. Similarly, when we were in Alaska, I didn't arrive with 450 other people, traveling in a pod practicing my rudeness. We were welcomed as much in Alaska as we were in Veracruz, just my opinion of course, but.... Veracruz is fun!

LOL, nope! most of the Mexicans as with most of the Alaska dwellers, called me "Dusty" in both places they were more interested in calling me by my name, not a stereotype.
