Haines to Anchorage Drive
While I've driven to Fairbanks a couple of times from Haines/Skagway, I've never driven to Anchorage (just flown to Anchorage). We might decide to drive it this summer, so I was wondering what the road from Tok to Anchorage is like condition wise? What's the average speed you're able to make on it? Are there any areas you should be concerned about (speed traps, animals on road at night, etc.)?
Also, if you've made the Haines-Anchorage run, how many hours did it take you and did you do it without overnighting? I personally like road trips, but DW has lived in SE long enough to think you should fly to get there.

don't know yet, but...
Don't know yet, but...I will by the end of next month. If you're still interested I'll let you know when we get back.
From what I've heard it's about fourteen-fifteen hours drive if the roads are clear. Some folks split it up into two chunks, stay overnight at Tok, others team-drive straight through. The worst part of the trip snow-wise will probably be right at the summit pass, just north of the border, but we've driven that part before in winter and it's fine as long as there hasn't been a recent storm.

During the summer you could easily do it in one day. I did the drive through the night this past summer, and it never really got dark.
The slow part of the drive is between Haines Junction and Tok due to frost heaves. Oh, and the straight stretch on both sides of Tok is a huge speed trap.
