Hmmm... I thought that was an improvement though...

Keeps the $300 Stetson from making some poor bloke look like
a $20 piece of junk.

Out here in Montana, the REAL cowboys who work the ranches many times wear ball caps! It's often the cowboy "wannabes" that wear the cowboy hats (and nice, shiny new cowboy boots!). They can usually be seen driving a way-too-clean and fancy SUV, and probably just moved up here from California to live the Hobby Ranch life. Their wives are usually sporting some new "cowgirl" type clothes as well, too funny. I see these types walking around the mall all the time.

It's the same here in Wyoming. Ball caps are the norm for most ranchers/farmers...I love them too. I do have a couple of straw hats (the slouchy, well-dinged sort) that I wear when out in the sun all day fishing or whatnot. I do see some of the 'old-timers' who break out their Stetsons and such for church on Sundays or when they go to a funeral. It is humourous to see -and is very noticeable - the non-natives who come in with that 'weekend-cowboy' mentality.

Could be worse. The mullet could be making a comeback!
Unfortunately, on the south side of Milwaukee, the mullet never left, it's alive & kicking....both men & women. Apparently mirrors are not an option in their household.

That's a bummer, here I had a clear vision of hot, rugged cowboys strutting around in their cowboy hats, but the hats would be nice & used, not shiny & new.

There may be some of those about - god knows I haven't seen any! My ex-husband is a rancher and the only time he wore a cowboy hat was for a parade (he's a deputy sheriff also). I never could get a cowboy hat to stay on my head (been measured and all but have too much hair) it was always easier to pull on a ball cap when working on the ranch...and that is generally the norm.

Default A hat is just a hat

If people who wear cowboy hats are wannabee cowboys, does that mean that the people that wear baseball caps are wannabee baseball players.

Yes, but it's a lot easier to carry around a baseball and bat. What's a cowboy with no cow?

So what would be a real "Alaska" accessory? Please don't say moose dropping earrings.
