Dillingham
Dear Teachercoach,
I have been living and teaching Hlth/PE and Science in a small village just outside of Dillingham, AK. Dillingham is the hub city for the Bristol Bay, Southwest Alaska area including the school I was teaching in which means when I wanted to leave the village I would have to fly to Dillingham first. There is around 4000-5000 people who live there. It is located on Bristol Bay. It is primarily a commercial fishing, sport fishing, and hunting hub for some large national forests, bristol bay, and the Nushagak River. It is also primarily made of of a Yup'ik Eskimo population. Dillingham school district has all the major sports including cross-country, volleyball, wrestling, basketball, and NYO (Native Youth Olympics). The town has 2 main stores the main one being the AC store that carry food, household item, hunting and fishing stuff and movies. There are cars and paved roads because there is a barge that comes in a couple of times a year. Primarily there are twin prop planes that fly in however operated by Frontier Flying Service or Penair, 2-3 times a week and Alaska Airlines Jet will fly in. These are usually cargo/passenger planes. There is a hospital there as well. Let me know if you have any other questions. It's a nice place. Alcohol abuse and drugs are a real problem there however. But, the people are nice.
