Long story short, I am getting a temporary job in Western Alaska (Bethel area) in January. I have lived here before but I got rid of my cold weather gear and I need to be sure I'm as warm and comfortable as possible. It doesn't involve working outdoors, but we'll have to fly in from Anchorage and use prop planes and snow machines to arrive at the indoor work sites at various points in the AK bush. Can anyone advise me on good cold weather clothing/equipment to purchase beforehand? Living in Texas, I don't have much anymore.

Are you looking to buy there before coming up or were you going to pick up stuff in Anchorage?

Just stop at the Army Navy Store in Anchorage and they'll get you hooked up. One stop shop.

Layers. Wear layers. Windproof too.
Get a good set of polypro style base layer or wool. Stay away from cotton. Then a nice fleece sweater. Then possibly down or synthetic down for that outer layer. The key is windproof.

It's Big Ray's now. Two locations too - downtown and midtown.

Buy at least some of it before coming up. I'm not sure if it would be cheaper to buy in summer but it's worth price comparing. I have a good idea of my size from my previous purchases. I want a good coat at least, since my current jackets aren't warm enough for Anchorage in January.

They were Toppers Oil before Mapco and Williams after. And, now Holiday.

Check out your local REI. You know your size, so start looking online. Shouldn’t be a problem at all.
