I just got back from the lower 48 after seeing a specialist down there. You can have the lower 48, it sucks.

Lol! I haven’t been there in over a year now so maybe I’ll feel the same when I visit in October.

Well yeah, if you go from Sitka to Seattle, for instance, that's a likely impression.

Going from Anchorage to Bar Harbor, now that could be an entirely different experience.

I’m raising my kids in Alaska, but I will say that the desire to raise them around the rest of their family is challenging. Also, without extended family roots, raising kids can be much more challenging. Especially living in the bush. To be honest childcare in general sucks in the bush. The cost to provide for the children is astronomical, and especially healthcare issues.

A once a year trip outside always cures you of the "maybe I should move to the lower 48 blues." At least it works for me. Definitely a whole different world down there for better or worse.

Maine winters have to be close to on par with south central winters though, arguably worse. At least move away some where super warm and send postcards of palm trees or cacti and such. . Or better yet stay, find a place better suited for you in Alaska and work hard for an extra plane ticket or two back home every year. How much more often would you realistically see your families living in Maine vs. Alaska?

Good luck.
