Default Moving TO Fairbanks from So Cal

I will be relocating to Fairbanks from Southern California to pursue a Masters Degree in Arctic Archaeology and cannot find a place to live! Please help. I'm interested in an apartment near to the university. Any suggestions? I need them to accept pets...actually cats...as I have 3. School starts in August so I need to have this figured out fairly soon as the move itself is going to take some planning. Anyway, thanks for any help/suggestions.

Is there any chance you can take a short trip up there to look around for yourself? Apartment hunting is oh so much easier in person.
I would also recommend calling a local realtor specializing in rentals. You should be able to find a name in the News Miner...

actually, I do almost everyday...I really don't want to live in a cabin with no water...is that typical? Call me "Paris Hilton" but I'm really used to having running water and plumbing. (that is about what I find in my price range) as a starving college student I won't be able to afford $1400+ for rent. Thanks for your help though.

There are properties that have a stream running through the outhouse.

How about talking with UAF and seeing if they have some sort of message board or online place to post ads, you may need to find a couple of roommates to live off campus. Once in a great while one will see a cabin or small apt with full amenities in the 700 range, but with the price of fuel oil appraching $4. It will be difficult.

Default alaska bound

HI. Well if you can't come down to Fairbanks before school starts I would take the advice of the other's.. craigslist is a good choice but it seems to me that the majority of ads cater to Anchorage more.. My wife is starting school as well around your time frame. We live in Glennallen and are moving very soon. We were looking to rent at first and were looking for rentals that would allow pets. A lot didn't but there were some that did. a good number we saw had pets on approval or others would just say pets allowed. Since heating costs are a major factor in monthly budgets in the winter we were looking for homes that included heat and or utilities. And if I remember you mentioned you could afford 1400/ month you should find one with no problems.. and yes, there are cabins with outhouses and no running water but those are usually well below your price range. Good luck and drop my wife and I a line at this web address if you need any more help. Alaska is a great place with great people you will enjoy your time here..

There are only a few mega-complexes and companies around, aside from independent landlords. Jillian's square is nice and it accepts pets. That company has a few other properties as well. Wedgewood Resort I think has a few apts, too. Good Luck!
