I've passed through Montana on the way to Alaska a number of times both up and down when I wish to try different routes. The most memorable time there was when a group of volunteers from different United Methodist Churchs, So. Ca included, went to Lovell to help paint the UMC building who were in need. I went alone, breaking a new RV, and arrived the day before 9/11
It is all a little complicated (perhaps more than it really should be). The moving company stated the more they had in their load, the more they could pinpoint a date to have our things in Alaska. Hence, our vehicles will go with them. And...I also have to bring two Labs, a Papillon, and a finicky cat...not certain if I wished to travel with that menagerie LOL.
The driving alone does not bother me in the least, it's the schedule for everything else.

But...I do plan to drive whenever I have to return to the -48 for family reasons.

It does sound more complicated than it should be but, if the moving Co, insist, I suppose your choices are somewhat limited. Truthfully, I really don't understand why one less vehicle would louse up a rather broad sched unless the car carrier only carry just 2 or 3. I can imagine what it would cost to ship those wheels.
Again, have a great trip.

Default Driving To Alaska

A relative of ours came up last year. He left around May 3rd from Ohio. He was driving alone. He drove about 12 hours a day (give or take with bathroom stops and a quick to-go type lunch). It took him about 5-days. He also encountered a blizzard in Canada.

If you stop overnight anywhere in Canada just watch that they don't try to overcharge you with Canadian currency. Our relative stayed overnight at one in Canada and the person at the register tried to charge him $20 when in fact it was more like $11.00 for the meal. He knows how to do the conversion with American money. Long and short, this clerk still kept $2.00 extra on him.

Just be prepared if you do drive and be prepared for any adverse weather conditions driving through Canada. Good luck.

I would say July would be an excellent time to drive and would not worry about any snow in July. You won't have to worry about any snow in Alaska either unless you plan on climbing to the peak of the mountains . Sometimes in July high in the mountains there will be small patches of snow left but you won't have to worry about that. I would also recommend you read the post "Given a home in Central Alaska" by megansmom. Lots of folks have posted excellent tips on there for driving.

Sorry it took me awhile to reply - I've been vacationing in Florida for a couple of weeks.

My husband will be in the radiology dept. Yes, there is only one hospital. We visited in March, and the hospital is really nice for the size of the community it serves. We were very impressed.

Thanks for the moving company ideas. For some reason I thought ABF didn't move people to alaska. We have used them before, and I would wholeheartily recommend them! I'm going to call them today. Also the Fox auto shippers.

I have also been on the lookout for rental homes in the area. Honestly, I haven't seen anything that would work for us (we have 5 kids and want some serious space), so we will probably buy a home. It's hard to get any real answers on what the market is doing in Soldotna. Our realtor says everything is going strong, but I also see sellers dropping prices......

Good luck selling your home, and with the drive. See you in Soldotna.
