Looks like it is still Caribou (Registration) season out there.....I didn't get a chance to go out around here (Wasilla), but once and wasn't lucky enough to find any! We took in a couple foster kids for the summer and had them till mid Sept and was just busy with them...then had to fly back to the midwest for family reasons....anyway, my freezer is almost empty, didn't even get any salmon with the on/off/on/off season at Chitina. Tickets don't look bad out there, says around 400 round trip....I'm looking for someone who is willing to help me get some meat, I have lived here 4 years now and have yet to get anything. Figure it is a long shot, but wanted to try.

That $400 gets you to King Salmon. Then you got to get to the caribou. And then you got to get the caribou home. Might as well go to Costco to buy some meat. It’ll be more affordable.

And you’d be limited to cows only. The bulls won’t be worth eating right now with the rut.

Also, registration hunt may mean you are too late to get in on it. Unless you live in the area. But I’m not sure of those regs.

I figured it would cost some and I would need the help of someone local, that’s why I’m posting....and I know a persons time is worth something, but I thought the rut be over by now....maybe not. When we do buy meat, we usually go to Mikes Meats

I just left that area and I thought about it, but the reality to make it cost effective I’d have to shoot 5 decent sized caribou. I don’t think I’d take a chance on a bull still. They need more time to detox. Caribou rut is totally different than any other rut IMO when it comes to stinking the meat up.

First thing you need to do, is look at whether or not you can actually hunt. That registration hunt might be too late to register.

Thanks, good point, I'll have to check.

That’s the same season we had in 17. The caribou don’t hang around town. 9 is different but you will run into limited access. Until it freezes up. Also, you may fly into king Salmon and the caribou are nowhere near you. Then you gotta deal with same day restrictions.

I also believe that federal hunt requires an address in the unit. But I may be wrong. And it wouldn’t be the first time I’m wrong.

Thanks, I have been told there are still options around here for a chance at moose, so I'll try that. Thanks anyway.

I’m not sure. My understanding is that unless you refistered or did a draw the general season is over.
