We aren’t going to get immense joy from ice skating. We DO get joy in being in a profession that matters. I’m a guidance counselor and in the last many years an addiction specialist, daughter-social worker and other son is a psychologist in the severe developmental disability fields. This is where we meet people with whom we share values, knowledge and working with people daily is how we develop interpersonal bonds leading to friendships. Maybe ice skating or some “activities “ might happen in the course of this meaningful kind of life....more likely Bowling! And There ya go.....
I think our definition of “making it” somewhere is very different, my friend :-)
TBH OP, here's where your threads started to go off the rails and that chip reared its head. You do realize that posts on multiple threads in the same forum won't generate different answers by different members correct? To those of us who have actually lived in places like Bethel the unrealistic expectations of wannabes can sound pretty funny. No, your son hasn't MADE it in Bethel yet. People considerate enough to answer your questions have. Many of the answers to your questions are available through other websites. Why don't you call Verizon? Google barge service to Bethel? Look up airfare information from Anchorage? Do trial orders by Amazon using a zip code for Bethel to see if fresh groceries would even be possible? If you don't want input from real people that might work better. Don't dismiss what you are hearing. Someone so dependent on high speed technology at all times isn't going to handle reality of the bush very well.

If you had stuck to your questions and left out the judgy tidbits, taken the responses with the spirit in which they were intended (cautions about expecting EXTREMES) and ditched the attitude you wouldn't have triggered the snark. It seemed odd that your son hadn't asked any of this himself and that you kept interjecting "we" when discussing family activities and experiences. Then you got sarcastic about what Alaskans seem to able to value or understand.

Someone supposedly as discerning as a guidance counselor should be a little less defensive about humor dished out on an anonymous web forum.

Yes, you misunderstood. You've been awfully busy blowing your own horn on this forum. Why is that?

Guess what, lady. Plenty of medical personnel manage to move to Bethel without holding mommy's hand.

I have a feeling you son chose such a far-flung location in order to get away from an overbearing mother. That's probably why he's got his face stuck in a screen much of the time as well.

I think that her halo would tarnish if she went to Bethel.

Oh, BS. My stepmom worked out in Bethel for several years and came from farther away than New York (Wales). She didn't need any help from her mommy and was able to adjust just fine.

I'm still stuck on how it's not possible to both enjoy ice skating and be a doctor.

Not gonna lie, I love my screen time. When I moved up here I switched to mostly offline games and got a Netflix subscription of actual physical DVDs. Streaming speed and reliability has improved since then, but it's still not great.

It’s disturbing that I’m from NY and have an attitude yet I’m trying to gather every bit of info to share with him “what he is getting into”. The fact that you are focusing on 1 question when I asked at least 10 is highly concerning. It tells me that something about the internet triggers you when here you are. On the Internet! I’ve been a therapist, special education guidance counselor and addiction specialist and I’m seeing a great deal of personal baggage here. I am shocked at how judgemental and tunneled the vision of a couple people. Do you not see the irony & contradictions of your statements? It’s curious to me how you focus on the Internet. I’m sorry you hate it there so much. You must never have been homeless. We have. We have dealt with death, cancer, epilepsy, single parenthood and have risen to accomplish a great deal. We focus on PEOPLE and the draw is the good people he’s encountered, the great people who in fact have been welcoming & helpful. Drab Houses on sticks? Dude. Who the f*ck cares? Cold? He just dug out my driveway. 2 feet of snow. -11 degrees. Again, let me understand....what EXACTLY are you saying that’s helpful in between the bizarre statements against trying to NOT pay for the internet? Lol. Do you NOT understand that if it were THAT important the idea of paying 300 a month for it wouldn’t matter? So this is my last attempt to show you that you are NOT trying to be helpful. Don’t even try it. You are more interested in maintaining a negative mentality toward “outsiders”. And by the way, Mr Murphy at the post office was very nice and extraordinarily helpful.
MY suggestion to anyone seeing an awareness of “what you are getting into” would be to give him a call. Not only is he able to give you the bottom line on what you are “getting into”, he truly loves living there in spite of the challenges. He, and most of the folks on here have been so much more helpful than the recruiter. There is SO MUCH TO KNOW since going there first isn’t an option for people. So I thank everyone for the information on shipping cars- btw is not $4500, lol. Around the 1000-1500 mark give or take weight of vehicle . He got a quote today. The websites provided on shopping ...great. Thank you! And it’s clear that one has to go there not for the “activities” lol. But for the reasons you signed on in the first place-to provide much medical support to the community and grow personally & professionally.
Cheers,
Lora
I call BS on the quote for the vehicle. I just moved from the bush. I’m quite aware of what it cost to fly a vehicle.

Your son might make it. He might not. You, on the other hand...

If we have Verizon service in NY will that work in bethel? Thinking if we do unlimited plan he can stream / mirror videos or Netflix to an Apple TV?

And I wonder why the interviewer never mentioned using Amazon for groceries (amazon pantry- extra 5$ a month free shipping on groceries). It’s gotta be cheaper than the AC or taking 3 totes via air plain to Anchorage & back, right? Amazon Fresh & Amazon Pantry are pretty consistent with our groceries in upstate NY....

Also do they have housing at the hospital for contract employees who are considered “medical staff”? He was told his discipline is considered medical, like nursing. We read some older Bethel Survival Guide that state’s nurses are eligible for for YKHC housing and meal vouchers (breakfast & dinner)

If there’s housing, with the hospital, how much is it? What’s included and is it really awful? :-(. I called the post man dude, Mr Murphy (soooo nice, knowledge & awesome!) who said they are renovating them bigtime but they aren’t ready for use till maybe next year ....he also said, yes, amazon does deliver there but I’ve read lots of exceptions.

Anyone work with Kreider Rentals? They seemed very contract-employee knowledgeable on their website but I read on some forum that they aren’t very responsive. Anyone use another realty successfully? This one posted a nice 2 br home for 1700 a month but I got a sense it’s like that come-on gimmick at car dealerships to get you in the door but “you just missed that one but here are some others that you’d like....”.(at twice the price too!).

How much is the cost for plane to “pop on over” to anchorage & back for, say, shopping or entertainment....?

And lastly, what is the best way to ship an SUV over? And approx costs. There doesn’t appear to be a ferry as he was told, but maybe they meant the barge.
Finally, how good are their family doctors at the clinic? Progressive or dark ages? Lol.
Thanks in advance for any help!
Lora
Verizon doesn’t work in Bethel. There isn’t a unlimited data plan. Might be a 100 gig plan, but it will only be 3g occasionally.

Amazon pantry doesn’t work in the bush. Amazon itself does, and what you have to do is add multiple items to your cart until you find one that ships. Bush Alaska is different that upstate NY.

You need to contact the hospital to determine housing for contract employees.

Realty in bethel? Unresponsive? It’s called the bush. It’s 3rd worldish at times. I loved my time there, but you got to learn the bush, is the bush. Most rentals will be word of mouth. Substandard and expensive.

Flights on Ravn (buy 5 get a 6th for free) are about $500 RT. You can look AK air up.

I just called northern air cargo. To ship an outback it will cost $7000.

Bush doctors are what they are. There are some decent ones. Some great ones. Some ok ones and some that flat out can’t get a job anywhere else.

It seems to me that just the cost of shipping a vehicle would pay for a whole lot of taxi rides, and that's before you get into bush prices for gas and whatnot. I mean, it's one thing if you're hauling around children or need a reliable vehicle as part of your work, but for a single healthy young person who might not even be staying long?

I'd have said just get an ATV but I hear Bethel has started actually enforcing the rules on using them on city streets.

LMonta you might want to keep in mind that Alaska is a very large very small state. It's entirely possible that someone reading this, or even replying to this, could be a prospective coworker, supervisor, neighbor, patient, etc. of your son...chewing folks a new one isn't likely to endear him to his new community if someone makes the connection.
