Default Moving from Fort Bliss ,TX to Fort Richardson,AK

I am single with no kids and will be arriving to Fort Richardson and the anchorage area in July August time frame to live there for 3 years. I have questions about the housing options(apartment, house, land prices). I also would like to know what the best part of town to live in for a soldier that has to make it to post quick, or which is the best part of anchorage to live in for a snigle 26 year old? Right now I own a 2002 dodge durango 4x4 that i am trying to sell, but i am planning on buying a diesel truck before I go up there. Is this a good idea to buy a diesel and what are the winterizing cost up there for diesel trucks. That is just a few of my concerns. I am thrilled to be going to alaska to the airborne unit in Fort Richardson, but am ignorant about alot of the cold weather limitations in Alaska and how I will be affected. Thanks
