It's not really a coastal drive, it's called the Cassiar Highway. Most of it is paved, but still has a bunch of gravel areas. I've never done that highway yet, I've done the Alcan 13 times now and loved every trip on it. I'd show you links on my trips, but something happened to the server where I have the photos.

That would be great. I'm eager to explore since I'll have 7-8 days on the road, but because I'll be traveling alone, I'm looking for route relatively safe and not too far off a beaten path. As a 20 something female, I'm not looking to get stranded somewhere trying to get the best view you know? I have a little more basic vehicle knowledge than the average girl, but I still have my worries. lol

Warpt I talked to a friend of mine that drove the Alcan in his Corvette. He said it was a blast.

I've made the drive north from Arkansas. I went due north to MN then over into ND and into Canada. I did it in 6 days in a 1951 chev pickup. In May. I did encounter an awesome blizzard at Muncho Lake...but got through it no problemo. I did the Cassiar south in 78 when it was no more than a 4x4 trail. Had to drive through a dozen streams. I hear it's in much better shape now but services are farther apart than the Alcan.

That's the way I originally planned but I have a friend in Driggs, Idaho that I want to see along the way, so I'll be heading up that way I think. I've got a 2005 GMC 4X4 so I shouldn't have a problem but I think the Alcan might be better for me, at least this first time up.

Regardless of which way I choose, it's still going to be a great drive. I've done a lot of 2+ day drives around in the East, but going anywhere in the West usually invovled a plane so it'll be like a whole new experience for me.

I think at your age, I wouyld take the boat ride there instead. Just safety sake idea. Wait til you meet your new boyfriend up in Alaska and then you 2 can make the trip. I drove it 3 years ago and I just wouldnt advise a young girl as yourself to do itr alone.

Chevy, is that something new in Alaska? When you cross the border you get a free boyfriend to keep you warm? lol

But I was interested in both the ferry and the drive, only I really can't find any facts about ferry times and prices on the Alaskan Ferry website - then again I can sometimes accidentally be computer challenged...

As for mileage allowances Myrc, we should just be getting one week/two weeks pay instead... not the same thing but it was all they could offer. After all, I was the idiot who moved to Arkansas. What was I thinking??

You have to enter travel dates to get prices on the ferry.

Hi there, I just discovered this site about 15 minutes ago and am soo surprised to see such a busy place about Alaska! Awesome! Anyhow, I live Wasilla, Alaska soooo howdy to everyone else here or coming here!

cost of gas might get you on the alcan trip, however the views will be awesome! You can do it no problemo...I did the drive at a younger age too!

here are a few links just in case they are different from what you already had:
Alaska Marine Highway System :: Alaska DOT&PF

Alaska Marine Highway Ferry System Reservation and Ticketing Agent

But you likely already have these links....
This site is really cool...i am going to have to check in here more often...by the way, you are going to love Wasilla!!! I sure do!
Sonya~
