With gas absolutely going to be well over $4 a gallon this summer, why the heck would you drive. Flying has got to be much cheaper? Unless you have a Toyota Prius perhaps.

Flying is less expensive only if you are alone (Alaska Air is around $700 to $850 /person one way depending what part of the country you pic up the fare) assuming just gas and minimum maintenance and assuming no less than 12 mpg. But, as you gain more bodies for the trip, the cost crosses over. Besides, the value of the sceneries along the way should enter into the picture. But, if you are time limited, flying is the way to go. I've already did the calc on my part. At 8 mpg and over $500/fill for every 800 miles, I need 3 bodies to break even in comparison to flying. Again, wear, tear, depreciation and etc should be but not part of the equation.

That would keep him quiet only for the time it took to eat them ! He has stated a great interest in doing the drive at some point, but not when the kids are so young (I tend to agree.) So looks like no Alaska this summer, but definitely next summer (connected to cruise on ferry or otherwise and several weeks in Alaska,) then drive to Alaska in 2011 when the kids are 7 and almost 9. Given hubby's great love of salmon, and our combined love of fishing, of birdwatching, of cross country skiing, and of wildlife in general, Alaska is definitely in our future.

Don't worry Allforcats and Lynn -- I haven't abandoned OlyPen! We'll be there in three weeks (we'll be in Sequim 3 weeks from right now!!!)

Great drive, excellent vistas, lots of wildlife could not ask for more.

If you have time you can stop/drive through the black hills area of South Dakota(Mount Rushmore, custard state park ext) and Yellowstone both are pretty much right on the way up

Good luck, Cant wait till I can Make the trip again
Hello zedzul,

You say you drove from Maine, do you live in Maine now or AK? If you count stops how long did it take you? I would be traveling with, as it stands now, 3 cats and a husky shepard mix dog so stopping is a must. Hubby can't sit for long either. At least gas was cheaper than. How did you travel, motor home, car?

Thanks,
Faith
