OK my $.02

I liked the movie... liked the idea leave the grid of society vagabond across USA- go into Mexico without a plan or idea- meeting people ... a wistfull dream that most of us don't do. Watched the movie while in SD. HOLD on there is more....

However I am fine with the end and him being called an idiot for not having an idea about what he did. My take- on the movie whether it was real ending or not - I felt the end was a realaztion of how stupid he was and it ended with him finding out himself that alone in the "woods" without knowledge or supplies and people that he realized he needed. And it was gonna cost him his life.

Now do I want to go see the bus - NO
Did beer come out of my nose laughing so hard when Warptman called him an idiot still a couple of pages back Yes but only shop at Walmart when I have too.

Do I think people who read a book or watch a movie want to do the same thing as they saw have no imagination or "normal" way of thinking of having a life... Yes get creative on your own.. make your own story.

Here in WA it is the Twilight craze... I want to move to Forks! What is the fashion and the price of a flate! Do you like rusted out mobil homes with camo and rubber boots? - you want a kick read some of those forums. It is a teenage cult vampire movie bombarding a very small logging town and wasn't even filmed in WA...... Why are people so stupid? sorry not normally judgemental but come on...........

Up here on Rainier they are now starting to charge people who don't go with a guide - don't know what they are doing - and are lucky to make it out alive - that are resucued. At last I knew the price of the chopper ride was $15K. Be stupid pay the price if you live.

I know many Mt climbers that have died. Many knew what they were doing for the most part and made a mistake. The others that say "I am going to climb that MT today" with no knowledge or training - Sorry your frozen meat to the locals.

Yes follow your dream but live your dream smart enough to live it or at least knowledgable enough that if you do die your death isn't quoted as " that poor dumb bast@@@ and take others with you.

Anyone who wants to go live in the bus and try it the same way is an idiot that needs a shirnk..... Go find another bus and leave a journal......

I was shocked when I realized how close to civilization he really was! I loved the book when I first read it but already knew of the bus... someone in Cantwell had told me about it a few yrs earlier. The movie was great IMO from the perspective of well written - I liked that the time line was hard to follow and if I hadn't read the book - might not have made any sense to me.. but yeah... I too thought 'oh **** - here we go... hoards of tourists are going to get lost lookin for that bus'! I hope they did move it or put in better blockades there. Or *sigh* God forbid, a better trail and direcions.. but I doubt anyone would allow that!

Nope, I get amazed sitting outside on a cold clear night watching the Northern Lights.

Getting a ride? Well I got to be home first, up chasing Polar Bears and Whales right now... Can't believe we get paid to do this!

I just watched the movie (most of which I skipped through)and actually was more interested in how the bus got out there than McCandless. Now that would be an interesting story. How about interviewing the guy who drove it out there.

The bus was more than likely driven and broke down or towed there by a mining operation and left after the mining ran out. I was told that is was even used to haul people and supplies from the railroad station in Healy to the site. At one time there was a lot of mining/traffic in that area in the 1950 to 60's.

The "Trail" is a road that was made by a buldozer years ago and now has branches encroaching onto the roadway, it isn't really "Wilderness" by definition with the road there. It is though, a very easy drive for ATV's to run it and has been used for a hunting access/camp by the locals since it was first put in some 50 odd years ago.

From the air, with a sharp eye, you can see some of the remains of old cabin/mining sites in the area.

McCandless was walking down a road to the bus, not wandering in the true wilderness by definition, if he had, he would have perished a lot sooner with his mindset, he simply had no clue to where/what he was getting into. The fact that he was smart, doesn't include the fact that he had much common sense, and there is/was/are a lot of stupid "Smart People" in the world, and he appeared to be one of them.
