lol. What, try to survive in the wilderness? No, I wouldn't try and didn't say I could. Where did that come from? There you go stereotyping.

Nope, I've never been to Alaska but would like to live a couple years up there in the future. Would also like to visit Wyoming as well since I think they are two of the most beautiful states. Hope you guys don't mind. I'll try not to die and end up in the papers. There is still 50 stars on the flag and Alaska is one of them. I know some of you just hate that.

Looks like there may be 51 soon.

The difference is is that most rural Alaskans really do have more than a clue about how to survive in the wilderness, and also have a real understanding of what "wilderness" really means, as opposed to being "twenty-eight miles from civilization".

And non-Alaskans have more of a clue of how to do something in THEIR state. My point is that Alaskans, as a whole, are no smarter, on average than people from any other state. Tourons come equally from all parts. Get over yourself.

Excuse me. I believe I've already stated something quite similar to that, if you've bothered to read the posts. If you want to start an argument, at least familiarize yourself with the material you're arguing against....

Our state is different than most. That's been my point and the point of the other Alaskans in this thread. Traveling from New York city to San Fransisco, for instance, isn't that big a deal, not much of a culture shock. City people have street smarts and that's a fairly cross cultural thing. Street smarts aren't worth a hill of beans when you're more than two hundred and twenty eight miles from "civilization".

and yes, there is a difference between a tourist and a touron. I freely admit to being in the latter category when I'm in an unfamiliar place in the lower 48 or in Anchorage. I get lost, miss planes, have a real difficult time driving in traffic, the crowds really get to me. My place in Oregon is back in the mountains and I only venture out for family reasons. With the lower 48 getting more third world by the minute, the thought of going back for any length of time is rather unsettling.

Lots of Alaskans feel this same type of culture chock; my own son announced when he was 19 that he was off to Europe for the winter, landed in Naples at 11:00 pm their time; I was a little worried about that. But he did fine. A lot of other kids don't, when they go Outside.
Just in case you missed it.

Met, I don't think you have anything to prove to a person who thinks lower 48 are just like Alaska, and you know it. True, some places have tuff areas: gators... snapping turtles or rattlers. Bears too. Cats gnawing on peoples sculls. But these are exceptions, not rule. Parts of Washington, Michigan or Wisconsin. Nothing like Alaska's climate, critters or distances though. IMHO.
A special combination that I did get a taste of, far from Alaska but very humbling and educating that most of Internet experts only had read about. Thank you. Elvis has left the building.
