Just out of interest, how did you rate Alaska? We may have Alaska (Elmendorf AFB) and Colorado Springs (AF Academy) on our list to move to. We have checked out both lots online and love the outdoors. What worries us about Alaska (Anchorage area) is snow/slushy snow/having to dig ourselves out of the house everyday!
My husband is also trying to talk me into Tucson AZ but that seems a bit too hot for me being english and being used to cold more than heat!

I am watching the house markets everywhere at the moment, I would hang on another 6 - 12 months as its a telling time. I still have my house to sell here in the UK but I am fortunate in that I have a lot of equity. Saying that I don't want to sell under the market value as any money I can make here is worth twice as much in the USA.

Could you possible rent the house in England and just rent an apartment or small house in the US?

In reality, it does not snow very much in Anchorage compared to other regions of Alaska, and when it does it does not take long for it to melt. The fluffy and big snow flakes provide you with great opportunities for taking beautiful landscape photos, and it's usually not very cold. I would not worry whatsoever about being buried in snow and having to dig yourselves out

Every now and then the streets in Anchorage get very slippery, and driving conditions become hazardous. But once you have enough practice driving on icy roads, it becomes much easier. All I can tell you at the moment is that Elmendorf is a very popular location with military members. The roads leading out of Anchorage (Turnagain Arms, and such) are very scenic.

Hi,

Sorry to bring up an old thread but I figured I'd make use of it. I am considering a civilian job at Elmendorf and I was wondering what cities are immediately outside of it that I could live and what the cost of living is in that area. Any info would help. Thanks

We were reassigned to Elmendorf and have been stationed in Alaska for nearly 2 years now. Ours was a DITY relocation from Ohio. My wife and I rode the Alaska Marine Ferry to Haines and received our household goods shortly after that. We love the outdoors, especially rock climbing here in the summer. Relocators Intl gave us several options..A FULL SERVICE DITY...A WRAP, LOAD AND OFFLOAD DITY...and we chose the SELF SERV DITY, Lee even crated our motorcycles..
