Default Haines, Tok, Anchorage

I'm actually in Anchorage now, and the lowest I've seen for diesel is $4.19/gal, but lots of places here are ten to fifteen cents higher as well. We were paying $4.37 in Haines, and it was $4.64 in Tok when we passed through. Most of the Yukon road houses are still closed and have last years gas prices posted, I expect it'll be at least in the $5.50-6.00/gallon range up through the more remote areas. Our '05 Dodge 3500 dually got 20.5 mpg over the ~750 miles from Haines to Anchorage, so we can make it without fueling in Canada. Didn't pay much attention to unleaded prices except in Haines, it's been holding at about $3.90-ish for a while.

Still, I wish I had an aux tank so I could tanker some of this "cheap" diesel back to Haines when we go back next week. I'd say that the VW diesel cars with their 45+ real-world highway MPG are going to get more and more popular with long-distance commuters, if they can even find one. It's unfortunate that more of the excellent european diesel models aren't available here in the U.S.

Or a bike if you have one of those. The price per gallon is going up every four or five days around Fairbanks. I saw a $3.99 per gallon of mid-octane fuel today. Unleaded was around $3.76.

Default could be worse

I guess it could be worse, at least cars don't run on rice. The price of that has doubled in less than a month!
