Fort Greely is the site of the ground-based missile defense system. It has a commisary, PX and mini-mart. It is located 5-10 miles from the town of Delta Junction, and as such is on the highway leading from Canada into Alaska thru Tok. the split in the Highway occurs up the road from Greely in Delta, and the northwest branch leads to Fairbanks, 120 miles away. The road that greely is on leads south to Glenallen, where the highway splits again, south to Valdez and west to Anchorage. Anchorage is a good 6-8 hour drive from Greely, Valdez is a little closer, maybe 4-5 hours away. Delta has several small stores including the Food Cache and an Ace hardware, a small outpost store, and several restaurants, 3-4 hotels depending on the time of year. Buffalo range throughout the area, moose, fox, badger, bear, etc are a little more common. Great fishing all around, but winter fishing is limited to grayling and Arctic char. Go for Salmon and rainbows in the Copper river area. Be warned it is extremely cold, and winds are sometimes quite severe. Greely is the site of the Army's extreme cold weather training program. I had a plastic tool case shatter a couple of winters back.

wishful thinking for FT Wainwright
Hello,
I'm a student nurse and not sure of my chances of being assigned to my first base of choice, Fort Wainwright, but I reallllly hope to post an update someday saying all worked well!
Moving North has been a 20+ year ambition of mine, I guess I am a bit slow on the follow through but, ready now!

Fairbanks is in the interior of Alaska.
This means that it is COLD in winter. Not exagerating, -15 to -50 without a wind chill factor.
It is warm in summer, up to 90 or so.
22 hours of daylight in summer, 3-4 hours of daylight in winter.
Schools are OK
Better in North Pole.

Fort Greely Ahhhh
Well I was there 96-98 in the military as an MP. I was the base Fish and Game Warden,D.A.R.E. Instructor, etc.,etc. I loved it and would go back in a minute. Very relaxed atmosphere in Army standards. The Summers are absolutely breath taking and well.....the winters will take your breath too. If you like the outdoors, you will fall in love with Fort Greely. I would have to say that it the best place on earth (Alaska) Ive been to Hawaii, South and Central America, and the Carribean. The base housing is adequate, and when I was there they had a PX,Commissary,Gas Station, Recreation Center, Small Movie theatre,Church,School and the bar. I would suggest that if they still have College courses there (which they probably don't) take advantage of them to fill in the in between times in the winter. There is a lake called Bullwinkle Lake, find it and you'll love the fishing especially during break up. I think Fairbanks is about 90 miles to the north, we would go there once about every 10 days or so to see civilization. Anyways if u need to know anything at all please post it and I will reply. Thanks Keith Butcher

I'm considering an assignment there myself. If I take it I'll be stationed there for three years. krbutcher, how do you get to be the Fish and Game Warden as an MP? I'd love to do that.
As for college courses, I'll be trying to participate in the eArmyU program which didn't exist back when you were stationed at Greely.
