DannyL, no need to be rude. I know the ferry is not a damn cruise line thank you very much. My dog is treated like a member of my family and is probably better behaved than most of the kids on the ferry and is certainly not used to being shut up in a car 24/7. Very inhumane. And IF I can determine a better method to move I will not take the ferry.
I haven't posted about my move yet since I haven't moved there yet but I assure you I WILL post once I do-sometime in May. I hope not everyone in Juneau is as rude as you.

now, I have a question. Why hasn't all these "I'm moving to Juneau" posters posted later after supposedly moving here?

Danny is okay.

Have you considered driving up to Skagway and taking the ferry to Juneau from there?

I can sympathize with you about your dog but I completely understand the Marine Highway's position on this.

I didn't know that AHMS was reducing the BEL-Inside Passage run to once a week in the summer. The webpage won't have the summer sched posted until mid Feb and printed schedules in March!

Xa'at....doesn't the seasickness bracelet apply constant pressure to the wrist? I was told that you can accomplish the same thing by measuring three finger widths from your wrist, and pressing in between those tendons on the inside of your arm....which is I think pretty much what the bracelet does...Are they uncomfortable or only when you type? BTW....liked your Ketchikan pics!

No, they're running that schedule now. Hopefully it will increase to the normal twice a week come summer, but I guess that depends on the status of the Columbia. Sorry if I'm being confusing- it's in my nature.
As for the bracelets, I don't know how they works, or even if they work at all. It is pretty tight, and there is a big plastic bead embedded in it that puts pressure squarely on the center of the bottom-side of your wrist- where all those veins are. I assume it stimulates a nerve there. Dramamine is really the best medicine- and check the box and dosage. The box that I bought was only like 8 pills, which was not enough for both me and my travel partner to take every 12 hours (starting 12 hours prior to the beginning of the voyage) as instructed.

I'll try to find the article but they are seriously talking about making one weekly Bellingham run in the summer.

SitNews - Opinion/Letter: One Bellingham boat all summer By Trygve Westergard

I saw another article that spelled it out in detail. If I find it again I'll post it as well

Bellingham sailings would be cut in half
KETCHIKAN (KDN) - A substantial reduction in the number of sailings between Southeast Alaska and Bellingham, Wash., is among the changes being proposed by the Alaska Department of Transportation for the state ferry system's 2008 summer schedule.
The agency wants to operate only the Alaska Marine Highway System ferry Columbia on one Bellingham run per week this summer. In the past, AMHS has operated two ferries per week on the Bellingham run, long considered to be a major earner of revenue for the ferry system.
DOT also is proposing to shift the AMHS fast ferry Fairweather out of Lynn Canal to service Sitka and Petersburg, replacing it in Lynn Canal (Juneau-Haines-Skagway) with the mainline ferry Malaspina, which would operate as a dayboat this summer season.
In addition, DOT proposes to operate the ferry Kennicott on a two-week-on, two-week-off schedule that would have the ship idle in Ketchikan during the two-week-off periods. The Kennicott schedule would reduce AMHS summer service across the Gulf of Alaska substantially.
DOT Deputy Commissioner Dennis Hardy wrote in a Jan. 2 letter to Alaska communities that the proposed operating plan was "designed to balance the needs for community service, staying within available funding, and maintaining regulatory and safety standards for the vessels."
DOT is accepting written comments about the proposed operating plan through Wednesday, according to Hardy's letter.
The public also can comment regarding the Southeast Alaska schedule during a DOT teleconference that will start at 2 p.m. Thursday.
AMHS summer schedules are in effect from May through September.
As proposed, the base schedule for Ketchikan would run as follows:
• Northbound ferries on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, (one ferry each day).
• Southbound ferries to Prince Rupert, British Columbia, departing on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays (one ferry each day).
• Southbound ferry (Columbia) to Bellingham departing Ketchikan on Wednesdays.
• The AMHS ferry Lituya would operate two roundtrips daily between Metlakatla and Ketchikan on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays.
During the two-week periods when the Kennicott would be in operation, the Kennicott would sail to Prince Rupert late on the first Sunday night/Monday morning of the cycle before returning to Ketchikan on Monday afternoon and continuing northbound that same day.
The Kennicott would return to Ketchikan southbound 12 days later on a Saturday and continue south to Prince Rupert that same day. The ferry would arrive back in Ketchikan early Sunday morning and begin its two-week layover in Ketchikan.
Further information about DOT's proposed schedule is available on the DOT Web site at: Alaska Marine Highway System :: Alaska DOT&PF.
Public comments can be emailed to DOT at: dot.amhs.comments@alaska.gov Discuss this story

Well if you go on to AMHS website, the summer schedule is NOT posted. Not until Feb..The bookings only go out as far as May and the fares pretty much look the same so I guess we'll see those increase along with the new schedule that I can't access so how am I supposed to plan my way up there? If I don't talk to you guys, I'm in the DARK here!!! Come on already...Drive, shmrive. I want to get seasick like Xa'at....Okay not really...I just want to ride on a big boat where I don't have to wear a uniform...like I did when I was in the Navy, but we called them ships. Yea....it's time for some wine..Later guys.
