Believe me, after 10 months of Bay Area lunacy, the attitudes of most Alaskans is a breath of fresh air. Just being in such close proximity to San Francisco made my skin crawl.

I have heard this many many times from others who stated they knew people who left and came back. I would assume it's because so far Alaska is unique from the lower 48.

I don't know anyone thats planning on leaving. Not yet anyway. For those that were born or raised here...I think it's good to get out and see the world. Some will like it elsewhere. Some will be drawn back because of the magnetic feild Alaska has. I tried 3 or 4 times back in the 80's...and never could stay gone more than 6 months. I finally gave up and buried my roots deep in the heart of the Kenai.
It makes no sense to call these people names or otherwise rag on them. I say kudos for having saved the funds to do so, and having the wanderlust to expand thier horizons.

The question asked by the OP was quite simple. Do any of you kow someone moving out of state. Had nothing to do with being raped by the government or the price of gas. So please keep it on topic.

We know a couple of families who took a long vacation with their furniture. The others who've returned are Coastguard who liked it here so much that they retired here after their last tour away.

Interesting that you mentioned the "magnetic field" Alaska has. I've heard that comment before.

The main reason I've heard of families who've left is the winter darkness/snow after a cold wet summer. They end up leaving the next spring.

Yes it's a sort of vortex that sucks you back. Alaska is a magnet...and I am steel!
It doesn't work on everybody. But to those that it does...there is no denying or fighting it. You'll be back!

That "magnetic field" sucked me in all the way from San Jose. Well that, and my wife getting an awesome job offer.

However, I love it here and the views of the surrounding ranges from our new home is absolutely incredible. I couldn't be happier.

So sorry to hear, Ill definitely pray for you and yours. In the meantime, hang in there and enjoy all that life has to offer, no matter how much time we may have. Have fun on the beach, man!

Looks like Alaska is going through growing pains just like it is here in Montana.

Seems like we are getting all the rich cats from California and New York who all want to play cowboy, so long as someone washes their clothes, cooks their gourmet meals, breaks their horses, moves their cattle, have access to cell and satellite phones and high speed internet, satellite TV, brand new SUV's with GPS navigation systems to get to the fishing hole for their wine and cheese picnics, (of course they can't clean and eat a fish, catch and release only.) private skiing, etc....

Yeah, the new Montanan sure knows how to rough it. *pukes*

Hope it's not that bad up there. Maybe when it calms down up that way there will be room for a hard working rocky mountain boy and his little family.
