Default Allergies in Alaska

One of our concerns about moving to Alaska is allergies.
My wife has asthma, and bad sinus problems related to allergies to mold.
I have bad seasonal allergies to maple tree pollen and ragweed.

Can anyone on this forum give some insight about allergies in Anchorage and the Mat-Su valley?

Thanks

Default Too cold for Mold?

Can I assume that the lack of responses to this thread indicates that Mold allergies are not a problem in Alaska?

Mold exists is AK but perhaps not to the extent of the Lower 48. There is so much cold and so little heat and humidity, that too low a humidity is more an issue. You need a source of moisture and heat to grow mold so while possible, it is easier to avoid.

I never had an allergy problem in AK but it sure is a problem in the Lower 48.

Default Sneeze

Thanks for the reply.
That makes sense, that if the humidity is low, the mold does not grow.

I checked the web and there is a site that lists the 100 worst allergy places in the USA. Thankfully Alaska is not on the list.

Ragweed is a common issue. I found out I was allergic to ragweed when I lived in AK and I found that cottonweed (extremely common in the summer) sets off the same problems.

As for Asthma I had mild asthma and I could even run track for Service High School and now my asthma doesn't exsist.

NASONEX.....Ask your Dr about a Rx

I suffer from allergies too, but with a daily spary of NASONEX I live a comfortable life with a cat, a golden retriever, two parrots and in the dust bowl known as Las Vegas.

We had a family that moved in next door years ago. They were from Arkansas and most family members had allergies. They seemed to do well here. It was so much better for them here than back home.

I had terrible allergies when I lived in Florida and North Carolina. They totally disappeared when we moved to Alaska.

I think you'll be much better up there IMO...

My wife is the same way, and when we lived in Alaska before.. no problems up here. Even now, this second time living up here, she still doesn't have any problems, unless it's cold... but who doesn't. Our daughter is the same way, and she too isn't having problems.

Now in the interior when there's a forest fire, EVERYONE will have problems... and most of us don't carry inhalers around so the asthmatics are at least better prepared.
