Well, that's true, specially here in Alaska were we have a lot of volcanic activity.
But environmentalists will probably slow down any coal to fuel refineries.

There are a lot of misconceptions about the use of coal here, which is unfortunate. There are now very good "scrubbers" (for lack of a better description) and I personally think the move to gas over coal, is going to be a bad one for MEA.

Can we say, higher electric rates? And where is the gas coming from if Cook Inlet is in decline??

Apparently MEA has different ideas since the Mat-Su borough killed their coal power plant in Palmer.

Quote:
MEA and Eklutna Inc. Explore Building a Natural Gas Power Plant at Eklutna

PALMER - Matanuska Electric Association has signed a memorandum of understanding with Eklutna Inc., a local Native corporation and MEA member, for the possible acquisition of nearly 70 acres of property in the Eklutna area.

MEA is interested in building a natural gas power plant on the property that could potentially provide cogeneration for future facilities planned by the Native corporation.

Sorry Rance, but it all comes back to politics anyway. It goes to your basic world view and filters down from there. Energy is politics in its basic level.

Eklutna, Inc is always looking to increase their bottom line. They don't get a lot of press but they are a profitable native corporation by almost any standard.

Hmm, I should go read up on the Denali Project. Better reading than Andrew Halcro's blog, I bet!

Andrew Halcro has a blog? I'm so out of touch it's not funny. I hope this "doubled cost of heating" is a figure of speech 'cause I went in debt paying for last winters heating... I've been paying attention to my gas bills and I don't expect it to double
