Drive up to Skagway and try come down from there.

My goish, CS', if you are in already in WA, why not, as suggested, drive the rest of the way to the Skagway as suggested by one of the above. Xterra is not a truck even though it may feel like one. Though I don't plan on going up this year, I've driven up every year since 97' and I still enjoy the drive and the sceneries. And I am talking driving a 38 footer alone except twice. U are hearing from a person who does not especially enjoy driving. I really think it would be simpler especially w/your 3 dogs.

No different than most other airlines that started charging for a second bag. The security check is a TSA thing, not Alaska Airlines, so it's a flying thing.
