I'm also going to tell Mrs. Kim that I've talked with you. I can tell from the tone of your messages that the two of you would hit it off very well. She came here as a young woman from a rural part of Korea, couldn't speak English and knew nothing at all about America or Barrow. She was scared to death! A local guy whose name is Wesley, whose last name I don't know, had been in Korea with the US Army in the 60's, and had learned enough Korean to be able to teach her some basic English! Wesley is in his 60's now, and a classic "drunk", but even if he gives Mrs. Kim a hard time now and then, he's always welcome back![/quote]
I believe the Wesley you are talking about is Wesley Ahmakak?
Are you talking about the Wesley that is ALWAYS at the store?

Hi Sam!
Well I had dinner at Pepe's last night, and every time I go there (about once a month) I have a great time talking to both Fran and Joe. Fran is just slightly older than the hills, but she is still going at about 100 mph. Joe is no different. He's just like his mom. (Mike, her other son, lives here now too. He's a got a normal metabolism... :-)
Well, the "red light" is actually not what it might appear to be. It is a manually operated light that was intended to stop traffic on front of Ipalook Elementary School to allow kids to safely cross the road. But I never saw a kid push the button to cross the road... and on the one or two times when someone did push it, they just wanted to see if it worked and when it did they did not go across the street. It was only turned on during school hours anyway.
It has been turned off all the time for a few years now. But one thing we do have now is 4-way stop signs every couple of blocks on just about every "through" street. The idea is to slow down the 12-13 year old girls on 4-wheel ATV's!
It's been a few years since I've been to Atqasuk. They do have a fine school there. It is still a very small place though. And pretty nice too.

Is this particular Wesley about 60 years old? Does he by any chance live way out of town, all by himself, on Nunavak Road? If asked it it is quiet out there, might he say something like "It's so quiet... I can hear the lemming walking!" Is this guy possibly just a little bit stubborn and cranky sometimes, and other time talkative, fun, entertaining! Was he in Korea in the 1960's with the US Army?
If that's the guy, send me a Direct Message with you real name and I'll 1) tell him I've talked to you, and 2) send you a picture of him.
