Question Deep Creek Packing, Ninilchik

I have a friend who was supposed to be heading for a job with Deep Creek Packing in Ninilchik. He was supposed to call when he arrived. He's not answering his cell, so I'm just trying to figure out if he ditched me or he's out of range, etc.

Is anyone familiar with the overall operations of Deep Creek Packing? Do they ever provide housing for employees?

Also, what would the local newspaper be?

The nearest news paper would be the Peninsula Clarion.

Well, it's a year-round place with a high school, etc., but at this time of year, there are a bazillion tourists there to catch fish.

So, it' not touristy in the sense of being a tourist trap, but there are tons of tourists there right now. Last time I drove through, the RV parks were packed.

Default Deep Creek, etc.

It sounds like you're in fairly close proximity. I was given the impression it was a bit of a tourist trap, but maybe that was a misunderstanding on my part.

What would you say the population is minus the tourists? If it supports a high school, it can't be too small. I grew up in a town that didn't have one.

There is a town up here that's a real tourist mecca during the summer, but it's true charm is more apparent when the tourists are gone.

By the way, did anyone see "20/20" tonight? Having just returned from Alaska, I found the story of Charlie Vandergaw pretty fascinating -- whichever side of the issue one might come down on. I imagine it's a story familiar to most Alaskans, but it was definitely news to me.
Here's a link for anyone who might not be familiar with it.

I would guess about 1,000 or so. There's a Russian settlement with a Russian Orthodox church, etc.
