I think it's a great idea to have the bear mace for sure, would the Outdoors store in Wasilla have it? Also I like the idea of taking some classes and learning the moves for properly shooting a shotgun. The handgun thing would have only been a last resort.
Thanks again for all the help y'all are awesome.
The barrel on most shotguns is not the same diameter down its' entire length, it is minutely constricted at the muzzle, this is called choking a barrel, it is intended to constrict the shot and force it to leave the barrel in a tighter pattern, a desired effect if you are shooting birds, gives an extra 6 to 15 yards of effective range, cylinder bore is no choke at all, just a straight tube, improved cylinder has just a little choke, modified a bit more (is the most common) improved modified is a bit tighter, full choke is quite a tight pattern (tight pattern means it does not spread out as much so quickly, each increment tighter give an extra 3 to 5 yards of effective range to the shot pattern of a shotgun) extra full used to be used by duck hunters, but, with the advent of steel shot (most shot is lead) extra full became counter productive, steel does not fly the same as lead, and, if constricted too much, will bounce off of each other creating an erratic pattern, not a desired effect when hunting ducks. For rifled slugs, you want the least amount of choke possible, other wise you are trying to constrict one large hunk of lead, a rifled slug is essentially one very large bullet, it will not constrict well.

Rifled slugs were originally designed so they could be used in tight chokes (that's what the rifling is for, to let it pass through the choke). That said, without any choke, you can use much harder slugs than the typical soft lead slugs to help a bit with penetration. Penetration is the main issue with shotguns and bears. I prefer rifles for wildlife defense but a shotgun can do the job with good loads and aiming at the right spots (don't bother with the head of a big bear).

Yes, the Mossberg 500A is the closest thing you can get to a legal, over-the-counter "sawed-off" shotgun!

It's been so long since I looked at mine, but I remember it came with two barrels. I would assume a full choke and an imp cyl. Do you know if they make a rifled barrel for these?

Right before the bear attacked Huck, the last words they heard from him was "hiyaaaaa." Mr. Huck will be missed by all of his friends.

The one I am talking about comes with one 18" barrel, plus a sock and a pistol grip. It's a smooth barrel, which is fine for loading it with any slug, and shooting at close range.

Now would a 12 gauge have any effect on a polar bear?
