Hi everyone,
I have been a lurker for about a month now and the possibility of moving to Alaska is almost a reality now. We fly up in 3 days to visit and interview for a job. My question and request for advice lies in the "how to get my stuff up there" category. We have looked at shipping (where a company puts a trailer in your yard, you fill it, they put it on train and then ship to get to your house, then you unload it), uhauling it, a mixture of those two and conventional. Does anyone have advice, we have heard the shipping is the cheapest, but we have to ship our vehicle separately so far (or drive it). My wife is 6 months pregnant so she's gonna be flying no matter what, so the drive would be my father-in-law and myself. Thanks so much in advance...

My man guy got a job with a trucking company and they told him to build 8 x 8 x 4 boxes, into which we put what we were taking - sold the rest. He took those to the closest terminal and they shipped. We had 4 that size, one half that size and a canoe, and I think the cost was right around $3000. The rest we crammed into every nook and cranny of the 5th wheel and drove, which at least gave us a place to sleep and eat to save a little. If to do it over right now, especially with the cost of gas, I would check the ferry rates for your vehicle and it may be more reasonable to drive to Washington and take that, also peace of mind and less stress about breaking down or whatever else could happen. Or if all else fails, sell the car, buy one up here, and fly with the wifey!!!

You may be talking about those "Pods" you see advertised on TV. But before you spend a bunch of money to move your "stuff", try this.
Find out how much it's gonna really cost to really move you and all your stuff, then go thru your house and inventory it. Look and see what is important and what is just simply replaceable "stuff".
I did this before I moved, and found I could replace everything (the stuff) cheaper than moving it.
