Question re the Alcan
Anyone ever driven the Alcan in September? Just curious if there's a chance of snow that early; I'm thinking the Rockies may get snow that early. A friend may be driving up around the 2nd week of September and was concerned if they'd run into snow or ice that early.

It'll be fine. Should be some nice fall colors then. I've driven the highway many times in the winter, less RV's. Your friend will be fine.

I've driven it 7 times, and the one time in the winter, the roads were much smoother, but it was -27 before I got really far north, so you have to keep your engine running if you're sleeping in the car. It was beautiful, though!

My last trip was in April and the roads were fine. I did encounter 3 blizzaeds but drove through them in 10 miles or so. May should be just fine.

Um I got a call from UAF the other day and it sounds like I'll be headed up in January. Do you think it would be safe to drive my little Subaru from Prince Rupert to Fairbanks in the winter time?

It'll be fine! The Canadians take better care of the highway than the Alaskan side in my opinion. I've done the Alcan about 5 times in the winter, everything is fine. Don't take the Cassiar in the winter, stick to the Alcan.

September is probably one of the prettiest months to drive the Alcan. Leaves will be turning colors and the tops of the mountains will be getting their first dustings of snow. Unlikely that there will be snow on the roads.
