Red face Should I go to the University at Fairbanks?

I'm currently a college student in Seattle but I'm feeling somewhat thirsty for adventure . UAF has some excellent programs and things, but would it be difficult to live there during the winter months? Would I have to use these survival techniques like canning, preserving, drying, etc. that people are talking about just to live in the dorms? Is there anything that one might not expect?

Why don't you graduate from your present college and then satisfy your search for adventure?

Not trying to be rude, but do you really think you could have a major, world-class University where people had to fight for basic survival every day?

Based on you first question, I would say you might not expect it, but Fairbanks is essentialy a modern city like any other. Yes, they even have a Walmart; a "Super-center" no less!

My girlfriend went to UAF in '06.

You posted this? ; ::Would I have to use these survival techniques like canning, preserving, drying, etc. that people are talking about just to live in the dorms? "" ---. what are you smoking? The only diff between Seattle U and UAF is its 50 below sometimes when you go to classes-- BIG DEAL!!!

Stay in the Dorms or rent an apartment or room at the corner of College and University Aves and walk to class-- 8 minute walk.

Yes better choices in the world but if its Alaska or Seattle and You seek / want adven-ture? Get up there! everyday is an adventure.

By the way, after 2 years of JC my OLD girlfriend had a real challenge with the new curiculum at UAF...

I think the canning, preservation comment is because on the homepage of uaf.edu website there is an article in the spotlight area called, "Canning and food preservation help now available online".
UAF Newsroom: Canning and food preservation help now available online

Ok, I couldn't help but notice that you made no mention of a "major" or any hint of your "grade point average", any plans after graduation, where do you envision your lifes' work after schooling. I suspect that the UAF would not be the place to consider a degree in tropical horticulture. The strong suits up north lie in the area of natural sciences, volcanos, earthquakes, ocean-ology, meteorology (nope, not the study of meteors), organic chemistry, plate techtonics (a sub-set of geology), engineering- with regard to bridges, roads, mines, sub crust drilling, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, chemical engineering-----I do hope you are strong in math. An education major may be useful also, likewise Journalism, economics. Landscape design may not be such a great idea, after all, you would be in direct competition with Mother Nature, and Alaska is the recipient of much of her finest works. If you can come up with a design for a better fly rod, or a fool proof, will work every damn time, non-lethal bear deterrent, you would not just survive, you would thrive. Also...... to the best of my knowledge (a notoriously limited supply item) no one to date has come up with a workable, sure fire, Trout call, or Halibut attractant. But, then again.....what do I know? After all, my major was Philosophy.

Well both my kids went to UAF and only had to pack moose meat in every other week for their floor of the Dorm..

They did trap the wolves now and the to keep the place safe for the moose they didn't have to hunt for dorm food....

Ok, now that you have that mindset, let me point out some facts....

Really, if you live in Seattle, the only thing you will find that is different is that the town is a lot friendlier and everything you have there, you have here... except for the Seahawks, but they do have Arena Football now and it seems to be getting more popular. There is sports, shopping and a host of other things you will have at your disposal just like where you live now. It gets a bit colder, but so what, you dress for it and get use to it. Just like you get use to the tropic heat if you moved to Panama....

Good luck in your quest...
