Question Where Do Alaskans Originate?

I ran across the Permanent Fund Dividend Division 2007 Annual Report (pages 18 & 19) and found some of the demographic information interesting. Where do Alaskans originate? These are the top 10 States where Alaskans were born:

41.6% - Alaska;
32.9% - Oregon;
07.7% - Foreign Countries;
06.7% - California;
05.1% - Washington;
02.4% - Texas;
02.0% - Minnesota;
01.9% - Michigan;
01.9% - New York;
01.5% - Illinois; and
01.4% - Colorado.

The only problem I have with the above percentages is that they total 105.1%. Of course if we just ignore Washington state (what a nice concept that would be) then everything balances out.

Male applicants: 319,935 (50.87%)
Female applicants: 308,960 (49.13%)

--------------------------------------

Most Common Names on File:
Male: Michael, John, James, Robert, and David
Female: Mary, Jennifer, Elizabeth, Linda, and Patricia
Surname: Smith, Johnson, Williams, Brown, and Jones

I would've thought that Minnesota would have a higher percentage, theres a lot of them living here in Bethel and the midwest in general.

Considering that the percentage they provide totals more than 100%, and these are only suppose to be the top 10 States (and we all know that people born in other states not listed above come to Alaska), it brings their entire percentage break-down into question. I also would have thought more Alaskans were born in Minnesota than indicated.

I wonder if the statisticans are counting the one who came up and died there or left after a time and then count the new arrivals from that same state. The othe night I was watching PBS on the "Great War" or WW1 and recently, Ken Burns, "The Civil War" where many of army groups have over 100% casualties. One was quoted to have over 200% casualties.
How those stats were arrived at was the replacement were counted when coming in as the wounded/dead are removed. So, if the group of a 100 have 100 causualties and the replacements also became 100 statistics, that would be 200% casualties and so on.
I hope I am wrong w/this weird thought.

none of those is surprising to me except for Texas (maybe the sheer percentage from Oregon)

Perhaps I'll help boost that Michigan number up one day.

Yeah, I though Texas was kinda low too. Everytime I visit I am amazed at how many other Texans are visiting at the same time and how many of the Market Days vendors originally had come or had family that came from Texas. ( I discount some of that to the smell of a sale lol)
