I'd say come on up Nick, if you like the outdoors, you'll love it. Anchorage is probably a good place to start, as is Sterling/Soldotna/Kenai. (The last three are kind of tri-cities within about 10-15 miles of each other...nice area. Want to catch a 90-lb King salmon? They gottem...) The guy-girl ratio is about an even 50/50 in Anchorage, and if you don't like the city you can always move to one of these rural towns. I ended up in Seward because that's where I found work, but it's not bad here either. I seriously doubt anyone is going to snub you for being from Idaho. A LOT of Alaskans came up here from somewhere else anyway. The 65% obesity figure you heard is wrong, but the 25%-35% someone else mentioned may be about right, and I do agree it is because many are cooped up indoors 6 months out of the year.

PS nhl, neither am I as compact. I graduated weighing 108 pounds. That's what I weighed when I enlisted. I retired from the service at 142. Still not above compact. 12 years later, I weigh 165, and am definitely pear shaped. I've gotten used to it, and like giving my birthdate buying cigarettes, am not embarassed by it.

Of course, I take a dozen donuts into the shop everyday, and the office ladies refer to me as the Prince of Darkness.

Thanks guys, that really helps to alleviate some of my worries. And yes, I would love to catch a 90 lb. king salmon, although probably NOT on my fly reel! Man it sounds awesome up there, I cant wait!
