I'm contemplating going back to Alaska for good. I feel suffocated here in the Nevada.

The below quote addresses AK when the S really Hits the Fan. I believe there is about a 10% chance of this happening in the next 20 years.

This kinda stuff isnt for everybody but I'm asking here cause I thought there would be some folks who have considered this scenario while considering the move to the Big Land , and how the processed the idea. ( besides blowing it off )

I wont let it stop me from moving to AK, I just havent reached peace yet , so I thought I'd get some ideas from ALASKANS of the Last frontier

Blowing it off and saying 'it cant happen' is not a solution for me.

I'm 46, single no kids, christian, male , thanks.........

A year ago, I heard one “expert” on the radio recommend Alaska as a retreat destination because it has the lowest population density of any State, and has low taxes. IMHO, he couldn’t be more wrong! The biggest problem is that from an economic standpoint, Alaska is essentially a big offshore island. Many essential items are shipped or flown in. What happens when the ships and planes stop arriving? It won’t be pretty--at least not in Alaska's cities. (Ironically, although it is the most lightly populated state, Alaska has the second highest crime rate in the country!) Coastal Alaska is also earthquake prone. Further, you may think that because of the North Slope oil that the state will have plentiful fuel. Bzzzzzt! Wrong answer! There is insufficient refinery capacity of meet Alaska’s “domestic” needs, and insufficient transport to get refined fuels where they are needed. (Current transport is geared to distributing fuel and lubricants brought in from the Lower 48--not locally produced fuel and lubricants.) So the little fuel left in Alaska post-TEOTWAWKI will be jealously guarded--doubtless saved for critical tasks like running farm tractors and chain saws. So there will be virtually none available for fishing boats or between-town commerce.

In a long term collapse, the residents of Alaska's densely populated coastal cities will likely starve and/or freeze to death. Meanwhile, those in inland towns, albeit better fed, will be geographically isolated so that commerce with the coast will be difficult if not impossible. Bush pilots will eventually be grounded due to lack of fuel, lubricants and spare parts. The only people I foresee surviving are a few seasoned Sourdoughs and native tribe members that still have well-honed outdoor survival skills and are still capable of reverting to a self-sufficient mode. The best set up for this would be a small settlement on a clear water (non-glacial) stream with an active salmon run and a couple of productive “fish wheel” salmon traps.
Another consideration is that the Alaska Pipeline is vulnerable to frost heaving and rupture if the power grid goes down. (It is not widely known, but grid power is used to run thousands of refrigeration elements that keep the permafrost frozen around the pipeline supports.) My prediction: In the event of TEOTWAWKI, the Al-Can highway will have heavy traffic with heavily-laden pickup trucks carrying beau coup gas cans, going in both directions: Greenhorns from the lower 48 thinking that Alaska is the place to be and Alaskan Citizens who realize that Alaska is not a viable place to stay in a long term .

Are we talking about Zombies here?

Then it goes to Fairbanks by truck.

GSD101 is on a distinguished road
People have been etching out a living long before any Wally world tried to Civilize Alaska
My point is there are few if any places left with the resorces to carve out a life for those who know how. When TEOTWAWKI shows it self in full color I'd have to put a 6' barbedwire fence around my property in TN and treat it like a compound, keeping out the raiders and freaked out people from trashing everything in sight
You mentioned Katrina. See what happens when the civilzation crumbles, people revert back to animals in an instant.
A calm head, a sharp ax, a reliable rifle, a good dog and the will to live; Alaska can give you the best opportunity for honest survival

LOL ~ ok, I'll play along here and add my 3 cents !!!! Yes, I said 3 cents ....

Amen GSD101 .... and Rance !!!!!!

I'm 44 yrs old... I grew up in the age of 3 channels on the tv, no microwaves, mcdonalds was maybe in some "big cities", no computers, no video games, we used ringer washers and hung our clothes on a line outside summer and winter, AND YES, walked our asses to school 2 miles everyday ....

And we survived just fine !!!!!!!

We use castiron skillets and still cook "from scratch" in my family .... We hunt in the fall and fish all yr round here in Minnesota....

But enough of the histrory lesson ~ lol

Now to the present then on to the future...

I presently live in Mn and am planning to make the "Big Move" to AK in the summer of "07...

The fact of the whole matter is that civilization is rapidly taking a plung in the the toilet all around the world !!!!!

Personally I hope that if the "Big Day" of the world ending as we know it happens... I am in Alaska ....

I know how to survive and strive .... and would rather spend my time in the bush with the 4 legged animals then the 2 legged idiots !!!!!!!!! At least you can reason with a Bear !!!! LOL
