I hope I'm able to get in on the stream. So the race goes from Bethel to Aniak & back? It looks like some very rough terrain.

Yes it does. From Aniak it takes a 20 mile loop up to Pike Lake and back through Aniak. It used to take a loop from Aniak down to Whitefish Lake but it crossed private property(land claim) and they added that loop up to the other lake. For the most part, the race follows a traditional snowmachine/mushing trail along the river and through back trails. For instance, from Tuluksak it heads up the Tuluksak River a few miles and cuts across the land up to Bogus Creek. This is normally a smooth trail. But if it gets enough snow and lots of traffic, it can get moguls in it.

Overflow seems to be a big problem too. Are sleds & dogs generally lighter than snow machines?
I understand that in last year's race the winds were very fierce. How many teams succumbed to the winds?

I'm not sure about the wind, but the water was just about waist deep in some places. There are people that ride their machines up and back, some coming back sank the machines in the drink. If you go fast enough, you can ride your machine on top of the water, hydroplane and you can go for miles that way. If you get the belt wet, you're screwed. The dogs can get hypothermia from being wet and into the cold air, as can the mushers.

Hmm... I'd think that it would be something to take pride in that a race has its course through your land. But apparently some people don't feel that way. Do any of the teams run the course before the race to get a feel for the new terrain?

Warpt does anyone make a toilet seat that can be perched behind a sled? I'm thinking of the one some company makes that can fit into the trailer hitch of a truck. I was reading about a musher who had to take a bathroom break in the snow. After the de-layering & the squat her team took off without her! At least if she could do her business without leaving the sled there'd be a slight chance that she'd remain with the sled as the dogs took off. What do you think?

Some people go upriver a little ways prior to the main race, but they don't prerun the whole thing. Nathan Underwood used to mush his dogs to Bethel from Aniak to race, I'm thinking he had an advantage of knowing how the trail looked before everyone else did.

I don't know how your mind works sometimes Barkley, I know nothing of anyone having a crapper connected to their sled.

Looks like the hearing has been postponed until the 12th now. Maybe it'll get pushed back to the 16th and they can kill two birds with one stone.
