My fiancee and I had been planning to move to Homer in april but over the past 3 months of planning we are becoming impatient and don't think we can wait any longer. However, winter is fast approaching and if we want to leave sooner we intend to by the end of October. We understand jobs are hard to come by later in the year but we just saw postings for environmental cleanup (his specialty) and for some of the processing plants. With the money we've already saved and for having a little more time to save we would be able to survive a few months if neither of us found a job right away on savings alone. Are jobs obsolete in the winter months around Homer or are there still a few prospects out there even in the winter?

Just remember (from what I've heard) Snow doesn't leave here until April/May. We moved up in June and so glad we did. Good Luck

Well the bright side is that many of the summer/seasonal workers are headed South and some rentals are a bit cheaper in the fall around Homer, there is work there, but mostly under the $10.00 per hour range.

As far as the environmental stuff goes, that is what my company does, and when I am not working on ships, I occasionally go and do HazMat Cleanup which I have been doing since I was in the Coast Guard in the 70's. There isn't a lot of jobs around unless you have a major spill or ship grounding. The small stuff is pretty much covered by the local work force that has an "Inside" to where they are on the "Call first" list. You will need the 40 hour HazWopper Class for Alaska and so forth.

Good luck!
