Lot's of up - down - and around corners! Plus some of the most beautiful country he will ever see! Some dangerous stuff along the way. Tell him to be careful and bring a camera. He'll see some critters along the way. And the food is great at Coldfoot.

Yup, pizza last night in the buffet!

Freeze-up is in progress up on the slope right now. Just light dusts of snow and ice here and there on the tundra. Roads are still clear, for now!

Yep. He will have a nice drive on paved roads until he gets north of the Yukon River. Once north of the Yukon River the Dalton Highway (a.k.a. the "Haul Road") becomes a gravel road all the way to Deadhorse, and the only other place to stop for fuel is at Cold Foot.

It gets a bit hilly around the Arctic Circle National Park, but the only difficult grade he will encounter (somewhere between 7° and 10°) is at Atigan Pass in the Brooks Range.

Once he gets north of the Brooks Range is it as flat as a pancake, with markers every 100 feet or so to indicate where the road is located. During the winter it can be difficult to tell where the road is located on the north slope with all the blowing snow.

There is not a lot of traffic on the Haul Road, but those who do drive that stretch of highway will stop and help should they see anyone in trouble, particularly another trucker.

I used the oil company vehicles when I drove the Haul Road, and they were equipped with a radio, good cold-weather gear, and two spare tires.

It is a long, but gorgeous drive. Tell him to bring a camera.

He appreciates the info. He will definitely take a camera. The way it sounds they are sending two heavy haul trucks up there too, so will be a caravan He said when we moved up here that he wanted to drive that one, so I just said have at it....Am sure he will love it, and will be stopping in Coldfoot to eat for sure I bet

In my very first post of the "recent ak pics" thread most of those pictures are from the trip Sweden and I took up the haul road last year in August. So he can get an idea of the majestic scenery there.
