OK...in the summer it's about a 30 mile hike from the nearest road through more dangerous terrain than you have ever seen.

But the best part is if you go by yourself...at least you will be able to make up story when you get back.

I don't like the NPS either but to legally go up there you'd better follow their rules. Up North of the Arctic Circle there's the Brooks Range but I don't know about any specific peak that you might want to climb. Good luck with that one, summer isn't too long up there, nor all that warm either. I don't think you know what you're getting yourself into. I've been in mountains in the Northeast (VT, NH, etc.) in winter before and even here it's quite dangerous. Very easy to slip off an edge or something hiking up when everything is frozen, winds are blowing like crazy, etc. A plank bridge over a very steep drop off once in VT (Green Mt National Forest) I was walking on apparently had some problems that weren't visible with the snow cover. My foot fell through and I could easily have gone over the edge if I had lost my balance while getting my foot back up and backtracking out of there (no real railing). You don't even have the benefits of such bridges across dropoffs and such in most of Alaska's mountains. What you see isn't always what it appears to be in the winter. Solid ground? Nope, hole hidden by snow, or thin ice, or something. I believe in NH recently (past year or so) some hiker died when a storm surprised them, other one just barely survived and had a limb amputated. Mountains in Alaska in the winter...you're talking much more extreme and dangerous. Bigger, colder, steeper, etc. I can udnerstand wanting to go up there but seriously get experience with safer places and wait a while.
