Talkeetna wildlife
I had always wanted to come to Alaska and got the opportunity about three weeks ago. While in Talkeetna I was walking back from the river and didn't notice that I went slightly off course while chatting on my cell phone; I had walked a distance before I realized I was a little lost. Dusk was turning to dark pretty fast and I was wishing that I had heeded advice from my Alaskan seatmate on the plane to get some bear spray! Needless to say, I didn't become a bear snack & found my way back. I'm considering a move to Alaska, specifically Talkeetna, any wildlife stories or advice? Thanks for any input

Warpt is right. You need to be aware of your surroundings.
Bear spray isn't a bad idea but I never had a problem with them up there. Moose are a different story.

Someone said to run back and forth between trees cause the Moose can't turn that easily to get to you. So I thought I would ask before needing to run from a moose...is this true?

Don't know, never been in the woods with one. I'd hate to though, I don't think I'd run that fast.

I am just following you all over LOL. I had to look this one up for the offspring as he walks to his bus stop and we've had our three meese nearly every day. What I've read is:
You can't outrun a moose. Try not to come between a cow and her calf. Make noise when out hiking. Don't look them in the eye - supposedly they consider this threatening.
I have walked around the house and there mama was, but I wasn't exactly quiet and other than snorting at me, she loped off. I, on the other hand, nearly wet myself.
But, I think I read that if they do happen to charge you, try to put something betwixt you and it, i.e. a tree.

I don't know why any sane person would be ambling about with a phone jammed to their ear...especially one who does not know the area. As Met stated, be aware of your surroundings. I've been fishing and had a bear swim within feet of where I was and he was not noisy about it.
